Wright-Patt Credit Union Announces
2017-18 Sunshine Community Champions
Credit Union's Goal is to Raise $225,000 to Support Two Area Organizations

Beavercreek, OH – The Sunshine Community Fund Charter, which was established in 2015 by
Wright-Patt Credit Union (WPCU), has announced their Sunshine Community Champions. The Sunshine Community Fund Charter was established to formalize WPCU's philanthropic support and continued commitment to the betterment of organizations and programs in the region. Through the fund, two nonprofit community organizations - Sunshine Community Champions - are identified each year to receive monies raised by WPCU partner-employees, vendors and business partners.
WPCU announced its 2017-18 Sunshine Community Fund campaign on Wednesday, October 19, 2017. The organization announced a goal to raise $225,000 by June 2017 for its chosen Sunshine Community Champions – Alzheimer's Association and Junior Achievement.
Alzheimer's Association will help raise awareness of financial exploitation and train/educate financial professionals around the ten warning signs of Alzheimer's. The Alzheimer's Association will also develop a military task force to build awareness and advocacy for veterans with PTSD. Junior Achievement will give young people the knowledge and skills necessary to own their economic success for the future. They will help build students' self-efficacy to improve their circumstances, improving lives by changed behaviors related to financial responsibility, educational attainment with career readiness, and entrepreneurship.
The beneficiaries were chosen by a partner-employee led selection committee who reviewed over 20 applications. The selection committee participated in face-to-face candidate interviews and power presentations of their overall organization as part of their evaluation.
About the Sunshine Community Fund
WPCU's Sunshine Community Fund Charter was established to positively impact those who live in the communities WPCU serves, with a specific focus in the following areas: financial education, financial programs/products/services, financial stability/recovery, and military troops, veterans and their families' health and wellness programs.
"WPCU's Sunshine Community Fund gives our partner-employees hands-on involvement in raising funds, strengthening our community and helping people become more successful," shared Tracy Szarzi-Fors, Wright-Patt Credit Union's Vice President of Marketing and Business Development.
"Over the past five years, WPCU partner-employees have raised more than $600,000 to support various area organizations. The Sunshine Community Fund Charter simply formalizes their giving spirit and further exudes the credit union's mission of helping people through life," she explained.
The Sunshine Community Fund's name was derived from Wright-Patt Credit Union's "people helping people" philosophy that has been around since their beginning in the 1930s. Back then, times were hard for everyone and those who didn't work didn't get paid. Government workers on today's Wright-Patterson Air Force Base joined together to contribute 25 cents a pay period to help a fellow co-worker who was ill, and in need of financial support until he could return to work. Recognizing a good idea, they decided to continue the "Sunshine Fund," a shoebox located in the nurse's office to help one another during tough times. In 1932, the fund evolved into what is now known as Wright-Patt Credit Union.
The 2017-2018 Sunshine Community Fund applications will be available early next year. For more information and details about Wright-Patt Credit Union's community giving and sponsorship initiatives, visit
