What is Junior Achievement?
Junior Achievement gives young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices.
Our corporate and community volunteers deliver relevant, hands-on experiences that give students from kindergarten through high school knowledge and skills in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.
JA programs empower students to make a connection between what they learn in school and how it can be applied in the real world – enhancing the relevance of their classroom learning and increasing their understanding of the value of staying in school.
How much time will it take?
The elementary school programs consist of five (5) - 30 to 45 minute sessions.
The middle grades programs consist of six (6) - 45 minute sessions.
The high school programs consist of five (5) to twelve (12) - 45 to120 minute sessions.
What type of training is involved?
The volunteer training takes approximately thirty minutes to an hour. You may attend one of our group training sessions (typically held every two weeks) or schedule an individual training as-needed. New volunteer consultants are required to attend one training session; however, they are not required to repeat training in future years even if the grade level they teach changes.
Who can volunteer?
Volunteers come from all walks of life. They span all age levels and include community activist such as parents, retirees, military personnel, employees from large companies, small business owners, and high school seniors. If you have the desire to be an inspirational role model, have the time to give to the students, and feel that there is a need for financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship education, we would love to have you join us!
What if I have never worked with students before?
No problem! We provide all necessary materials and show you how to use them. We also give you helpful hints and ongoing support. Plus, the teacher is always there to help you.
Do I really have anything to offer these students?
Absolutely! Students in Alaska should know about the business world around them and all the opportunities available to them. You are the key to that knowledge. Your experiences and familiarity with the business world are exactly what the students should hear about. You are also there to be a role model to the students by illustrating where secondary education can lead them. Above all, you can give students a chance to be heard, share their ideas and give them support and encouragement.
When would I be teaching?
All classes run during the school day, between 8:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Many volunteers go in before work or utilize their lunch break to volunteer.
What if I can't make it to one of my classes?
We know that you are busy, work is a priority, and that business meetings and travel are often unavoidable. We warn the teachers about this ahead of time. If you cannot make a visit simply let your teacher know in advance and reschedule the visit.
What if my schedule is always changing?
If you want to volunteer but have a varying schedule, it may be best to work with a partner. Pick a fellow colleague whom you enjoy spending time with. Collective teaching will make it fun for you and your partner and he/she can always take over the class if you have a meeting.
What local areas are involved in Junior Achievement programs?
Junior Achievement provides programs to over 12,800 students, serving over 600 classrooms in 47 Alaskan communities.
How do I get signed up to volunteer?
You can either contact the Junior Achievement office at 907-344-0101, or sign-up here. A JA staff member will be happy to answer any questions you may have or let you know what classes are available.
What does JA cost?
Junior Achievement is provided at no cost to schools. The funding for the programs comes from corporations, private grants, individuals and special events.
I want to be involved but I simply do not have time to volunteer — what else can I do?
You could participate in numerous fundraisers including Hall of Fame, our annual 3-Club Scramble Golf Tournament, or Bowl-A-Thon events. You may also make a personal donation to JA. We would love to help you get involved in any way that you can!
