JA BizTown

Opening Minds and Doors

2017 Hall of Fame Laureates
The JA BizTown program provides students with a realistic opportunity to experience how basic economic concepts are applied in the real world. By participating in JA BizTown, young students experience the responsibilities and opportunities of citizenship in a free enterprise system.
Designed for students in 4th through 6th grades, the JA BizTown program is presented in three progressive stages:
1. Students complete a four-week classroom curriculum on economics, in which they choose jobs, develop business plans, and discuss the importance of citizen rights and responsibilities.
2. Students take on the roles of citizens, business owners, employees, and consumers during a day-long JA BizTown simulation.
3. Students return to school and complete a follow-up classroom curriculum.
Teachers and volunteers receive training to help facilitate the JA BizTown program.
At JA BizTown kids run the world for the day! Students work in one of our 18 shops, trying to pay back their business loan by the end of the day. They will go shopping in JA BizTown, buying things from other shops while balancing their checkbook - allowing students to learn firsthand what it takes to create and run a business, as well as personally earn and manage money.

JA BizTown Volunteer

Eighteen to twenty-five (18-25) JA BizTown volunteers are needed to help guide the students through the simulation, keep them on-task, answer their questions, and share their own personal work experiences.
If you are a parent or family member who would like to join us as a volunteer, please contact your student's teacher to register.
If you are a corporate or community partner and would like to join us as a volunteer or schedule an entire group to "adopt a JA BizTown day," please email Pete Crozier, Vice President of Capstone Programs, at pcrozier@jacols.org.
If you wish to join us at JA BizTown you must register as a volunteer prior to your visit. As a security procedure for the students, adults who have not completed their registration online will not be allowed entrance into the facility. Volunteers are registered on a first-come, first-served basis. So that students may focus on the activities of the day, it is our policy that parents will not be assigned to their child's shop. Thank you for your understanding.
