JA Step to Success®

JA Step to Success® introduces 3rd-grade students in the School District of Philadelphia to the concept of college in order to inspire them to achieve academic success and pursue higher education. The program is part of an initiative by Superintendent Dr. William R. Hite to have 100% of students graduate ready for college or career. Students are encouraged to create a successful path early in their academic career and recognize that college is a realistic and tangible part of their future.
JA Step to Success® is a collaboration between Junior Achievement of Southeastern Pennsylvania, the School District of Philadelphia, and many local college and university partners. Program components include a 3-hour visit to a local college or university, and pre- and post- classroom lessons designed to prepare students and reinforce the college visit experience. This initiative represents a community coming together to support schools in changing the way our Philadelphia students think of their postsecondary futures.

Program Sessions

Beginning the College Journey

Beginning the college journey provides students with an understanding of key terms associated with college. Key terms will be introduced and defined during the lesson. Student's understanding of these key terms will be reinforced through a word game.

The Importance of Attending College

Following the introduction of keywords and concepts associated with going to college, students will design an advertisement identifying the importance of going to college based on the knowledge they gained during the first session.

College Campus Site Visit: Making It Real

Students will visit a college campus to experience and begin to understand what it will be like to
attend college after they graduate from high school.

Pulling It All Together

Following the campus visit, students will discuss what they learned about preparing for college
throughout the JA Step to Success program experience. Students will receive a certificate that asks them to promise to make good decisions throughout school and to attend college after high school graduation.
