Check out this story from one of our JA Finance Park volunteers:
Students in JA Finance Park create a budget for a fictional character we assign to them. They make decisions in 17 budget categories; ranging from housing, groceries, entertainment, and health care. While I was working with a student, her fictional character was the parent in a 4 person household – 2 adults/2 kids. She was shopping at Schnucks for groceries and listed her weekly groceries as one frozen pizza, one pound of bacon and one half gallon of ice cream. (She had no money allotted for eating out as well.) She believed that's all she needed. So, I asked her "That's all you are going to buy for a family of 4 for a week?" She answered yes. So, I reminded her there were 21 meals each week and asked what she was going to eat for breakfast. She said the bacon. So, I asked how one pound of bacon would last 4 people for 7 meals. We joked about that being a new diet to try! I think from that day she came away with a respect for how much money it takes to survive every day.
