"Students in JA Finance Park create a budget for a fictional character we assign to them.  They make decisions in 17 budget categories; ranging from housing, groceries, entertainment, and healthcare.  While I was working with a student, her fictional character was the parent in a 4 person household – 2 adults/2 kids.  She was shopping at Schnucks for groceries and listed her weekly groceries as one frozen pizza, one pound of bacon and one-half gallon of ice cream.  (She had no money allotted for eating out as well.)  She believed that's all she needed.  So, I asked her "That's all you are going to buy for a family of 4 for a week?"  She answered yes.  So, I reminded her there were 21 meals each week and asked what she was going to eat for breakfast.  She said the bacon.  So, I asked how one pound of bacon would last 4 people for 7 meals.  We joked about that being a new diet to try!  I think from that day she came away with a respect for how much money it takes to survive every day."
