2019 Wichita Business Hall of Fame Laureates Announced
Three business leaders were announced as the 2019 Wichita Business Hall of Fame Laureates at a press luncheon held October 15 by Junior Achievement of Kansas at Commerce Bank on Waterfront Parkway, Wichita.
The 2019 laureates are: Tim Buchanan, Legend Companies; Tim Farrell, Retired, Weaver Manufacturing; and Chris Goebel, Starlumber & Supply Co., Inc.

Tim is a native Wichitan, graduating from East High in 1973 and attending Wichita State University.
Tim started his first company venture at age 20 then in 1977 formed his first subcontracting company doing interior cabinets and woodwork. In 1984, Tim formed Buchanan Homes and became a prominent Wichita Home builder and developer, building in many of Wichita’s most prestigious communities.
In 1989 after participating in mission work in Haiti, Tim looked to diversify his business with ventures that had a direct meaningful impact on the holistic quality of life for individuals. He and a Wichita friend co-founded Sterling House Corporation in 1990. Tim served as Chairman and CEO. Assisted living was an unproven experiment in only a few buildings around the country. After completing the prototype design, Buchanan Homes built the first Sterling House Assisted Living in Augusta, KS, in 1991. In 1995, Sterling House completed an Initial Public Offering and soon expanded to over 200 Sterling Houses nationwide. In 1997, Sterling merged with another public company later renamed Alterra where Tim served as President and Vice Chairman. Over the next two years, the company grew to operate 450 senior housing residences in 35 states with over $1 billion in assets.
Mr. Buchanan was awarded the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1995. Tim resigned his President role at Alterra in 1999 and continued to serve as consultant and board member till 2001.
Mr. Buchanan is considered a pioneer in the Assisted Living business. He worked tirelessly to expand the acceptance of assisted living, lobbying for its licensure, developing new care delivery practices, and advancing building design and codes that recognize the uniqueness of the model.
In 2001, Tim launched Legend Senior Living, continuing the mission of serving senior adults and continues to serve as CEO. As of October 2018, Legend operates 40 senior housing residences in 6 states and employs over 2,000 people. Legend is known nationally for its quality practices and strong culture of character. Thanks to fantastic leaders and associates, Legend has been the recipient of numerous industry awards for quality and innovation. In November 2018, Legend was named among the top 40 Best Places to Work in Fortune Magazine.
Tim currently serves as Board Chairman of Argentum, the nation’s largest Assisted Living trade association, a member of the National Investment Center (NIC) Operator Advisory Board, past member of the Executive Board of the American Seniors Housing Association, recent founding Chairman of the Senior Living Credentialing Commission, and Board Member of the Texas Assisted Living Association. Locally Tim serves as Board Member of Doc’s Friends, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Mid America Nazarene University.
Tim and Gail are active in their local church and volunteer for many local organizations. Tim enjoys volunteer work and began volunteering with neighborhood development groups during high school. Since 1988 he has served on numerous mission trips building schools and churches.
Tim and Gail Buchanan have been married 35 years, have two married children and 3 grandchildren. His son Matthew joins him in managing Legend, and daughter Emily is in animation at Dreamworks. Tim spends free time with grandkids, flying, tinkering in his woodshop, and nurturing his passion for collecting cars.
Building designs and care delivery concepts his company created in the early 90s are still utilized in assisted living today. He was a leader in the formation of Assisted Living as an accepted model of care and was instrumental in the passing of legislation in many states for the licensing of Assisted Living.
A Native Wichitan, Tim Farrell was the 5th of 9 children born to Dan and Juliene Farrell. Tim’s mother died when he was 13, and shortly after, he began to demonstrate what would prove to be one of his greatest assets: a strong work ethic that would serve him his entire life. He attended Kapaun Mount Carmel, East High and Wichita State University. One early job was at Hyde Park Dairy where – as a teenager – he served as Union Steward. While a student at WSU, Tim worked at the Police Neighborhood Service Center doing social work, while also gaining experience on the line at Cessna Aircraft.
Always aspiring to entrepreneurship, Tim later started a janitorial service company; owned and managed Bingo parlors in Wichita; as well as owning and managing several rental properties. In 1984, he finally realized his dream of entering the world of manufacturing when he partnered with his brother Dan Farrell to purchase Weaver Manufacturing, Inc. Tim became the President and CEO of Weaver, which had revenues of $300,000 annually and 10 employees. Weaver built large complex machine detail assemblies for Boeing, Cessna, Raytheon, Goodrich Aerospace, Lockheed Martin and Spirit. They built the wingtip replacements for the entire fleet of F15 Fighters. Winning numerous awards for quality and on-time delivery, Weaver Manufacturing was honored by American Machine Magazine as one of the top 10 machine shops in the country in 2008. During Tim’s tenure as president, the company grew to 140 employees and 40 million in sales, before the company sold in March of 2011.
While Tim is proud of all that Weaver Manufacturing was able to accomplish, he feels that his contributions to Wichita through community service are more important. Tim has served over the years as a member of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters, Victory in the Valley, Wichita Chamber of Commerce and the Wichita Children’s Home. He served on the Board of Trustees for Wichita Collegiate School and is a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. In addition to being a board member, he is also actively involved in the community in many other ways. Tim was a basketball coach for years at the YMCA and a Big Brother himself. He has visited nursing homes and the cancer center with his therapy dog, a chocolate lab named Hazel, and volunteers regularly at Kidzcope, a center for grieving children.
Tim and his wife Tracy have 5 children; Audrie, Amie, Megan, Thomas and Ben. They have 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and another grandchild on the way! In these retirement years, they enjoy volunteering in the community, being active in their grandchildren’s lives, and hosting extended family and friends at their lake home on Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri.
Chris Goebel was born and raised in Wichita, and has worked for Star Lumber his entire career, starting first as a part-time employee while in high school. Chris graduated from Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in 1975. He received his Bachelors in Business Administration and Accounting and his Masters in Management, all from Friends University.
Throughout his schooling, Chris continued working for Star Lumber. His career at Star Lumber has included being the Construction Field Superintendent, Contractor Sales, Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing, and President and CEO from 1989 to 2010. Since 2010, Chris has been the Chairman of the Board and CEO. Over his years at Star Lumber & Supply Co, Chris has overseen efforts to professionalize product selection, completed millions of dollars in new residential and commercial construction and remodeling projects, and led the entire company to over $135 million in sales with over 350 employees with locations in Manhattan as well as Wichita. Star’s primary activities include sales, manufacturing, installation and distribution of lumber, building materials, and flooring products to the central Kansas and Oklahoma regions.
Chris has served on multiple boards over the years, including the Wichita Area Chamber of Commerce, Quivira Council Boy Scouts of America, Diocesan Stewardship Committee, United Way of the Plains, and Friends University. He was also on the board and past chair of the Mid-America Lumberman’s Association, Wichita Festivals, Kansas YPO, and Metropolitan Area Planning Commission. Chris was honored to serve as Admiral WW Smith #38 at Riverfest 2011.
He currently serves on the boards of Fidelity Bank, Catholic Charities, Stine Lumber out of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and several church-related boards. He is a member of the Wichita Area Builders Association, Associated General Contractors of Kansas, Kansas Family Business Forum, Wichita Wagonmasters, the local SOP chapter, is the current chair of Legatus of Wichita, and is a member and former President of the Downtown Rotary Club. Chris regularly volunteers at the construction sciences program at Bishop Carroll High School, and has presented on the topic of family businesses at several national conferences.
Chris and his wife of 41 years, Cozy, enjoy spending time with their three grown children Kelly, Kevin, & Katie, and their 14 grandchildren, especially at the lake or in the mountains. In addition, Chris enjoys woodworking, golf, and NASCAR racing.
