Introduction to Volunteering

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Junior Achievement! By volunteering in a classroom with JA of Kansas, you are showing your dedication to the children of this state and are making an investment in their future success!

What does a JA volunteer do?

Junior Achievement volunteers are members of the business community who visit a classroom for five or six sessions during a semester and present informative, interactive and fun lessons to students in grades from kindergarten through early high school. The lessons focus on teaching the students financial literacy, entrepreneurship and workforce development skills.

Where does the JA program operate?

The majority of Junior Achievement of Kansas programming takes place at the elementary-school level, but we are constantly expanding our programming to include more middle and high school students. Our programming is currently running in Lawrence, Marysville, Phillipsburg, Seneca, Topeka, the Wichita region. Several other communities run limited programming as well, but we are always looking for opportunities for expanding the program throughout the state. What is the time commitment?

The program materials and lesson guides are provided by JA USA, and are presented in an easy-to-follow format. The lessons are 30 to 45 minutes depending on the age of the students. Volunteers typically visit the younger grades over the course of one or two weeks, while middle school programming is typically presented once a week over the course of six weeks. Most volunteers spend a total of five to seven hours in the classroom, with an hour of two of prepraration at home.

Can I volunteer with a partner?

Absolutely! We have several volunteers who feel more comfortable working as a team, and we encourage our veteran volunteers to team up with newer volunteers to help them feel comfortable in front of the class and with the JA program materials.
