Retro Themed Bowl-A-Thon Held in Lawrence

It was a trip back through time October 25 - 27 in Lawrence as the Douglas County District of Junior Achievement (JA) of Kansas hosted their annual Bowl-A-Thon event, this year with a retro theme. The Bowl-A-Thon is Douglas County's second largest fundraiser of the year.

Nearly 300 bowlers descended upon Royal Crest Lanes over the weekend-long event to celebrate the last few months of fundraising efforts. Teams were formed in August and have been raising funds in a variety of ways for JA.

Prizes were awarded each session for those that best portrayed the retro theme with a costume. Over the three days, there was tie-dye, peace sign necklaces and bright colors all around, with hints of the theme throughout the decorations and bowling alley. Throughout the sessions, the bowlers had the opportunity to spin the prize wheel to earn more prizes such as gift cards to local businesses. Sonic gift cards were handed out to those that bowled strikes with a colored headpin and extra prizes were awarded to those who were the first to the emcee with fun items like a $2.00 bill, those that had a birthday that week or were wearing Chiefs apparel. A big draw for the night was the 50/50 Raffle and opportunity to win KU Men's Basketball tickets.

JA Kingpins were awarded to bowlers that raised over $350.00 for JA of Kansas. The McFadden Group had eight bowlers that received Kingpins and collectively, raised $12,210 as a team, earning them a new company record from years prior.

Wayne and Larry's, the restuaruant connected to Royal Crest Lanes, held two additional fundraisers throughout the weekend for the Douglas County District of JA. Friday evening, Nashville in Kansas, a band featuring Kansan Scott Heidner, donated all cover charges back to Junior Achievement of Kansas. Additionally, an autographed Patrick Mahomes football was raffled up during the Sunday Night Football game featuring the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Green Bay Packers. All raffle donations were given to JA.
