JA of Kansas - Topeka Hosts Annual Bowl-A-Thon Fundraiser
The Topeka area of Junior Achievement of Kansas hosted their annual Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser, Thursday, October 17 - Sunday, October 20 at West Ridge Lanes and Family Fun Center. The annual event is the second largest fundraiser for the Topeka area of JA.
Nearly 70 teams took to the bowling lanes this year over the course of the weekend. New to the 2019 event was the addition of a Thursday afternoon session, offering an additional opportunity for teams to take part in the fun. Also new to 2019 were local Topeka "celebrities" on hand to emcee the weekend's activities: Sean Kelly from Majic 107.7 and Tiffany Littler with KSNT News.
This year's theme was TV shows. Teams were encouraged to dress up as their favorite TV ensembles or characters, and the weekend saw the likes of the Mickey Mouse Club, Sesame Street, Winnie the Pooh and TV celebrity chefs, among others. Throughout the session, bowlers had the opportunity to play JA Plinko for prizes, and win Sonic coupons for hitting strikes. The highlight of the bowling sessions was the mad dash to the emcee to "Name that TV Theme Song" for opportunity to win additional prizes. Theme songs such as "Full House," "Magnum P.I.," "Green Acres," and more could be heard over the loudspeaker, providing fun and nostalgia for bowlers.
The Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser has been in Topeka for over 20 years. Teams are formed throughout the community and raise funds for Junior Achievement of Kansas in the months leading up to the Bowl-a-Thon session. Participants that raise over $500 are considered "Kingpin" fundraisers and 2019 saw seven Kingpin fundraisers. Additional prizes will be awarded in the weeks to come, such as the Grand Prize, offered to any bowler that brought in over $100, and the ultimate prize given to the bowler who raised the most funds.
Sponsors of the event include: Amerpride Services, Goodyear, JETZ Service, Midwest Health, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Bank of America, Cox Communications, FHL Bank, Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation, Washburn University School of Business, KSNT News, Majic 107.7, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Lamar, Topeka Blueprint, Dr Pepper, Frito Lay, Logan Business Machines and over 15 additional sponsors that donated prizes for the weekend.
