What is JA BizTown Summer Camp?

Monday: We kick off the week by looking at what makes up a community. After a fun icebreaker (where kids get to know each other and the counselors), campers will create their own community by discussing the important aspects needed for both producers and consumers. Next, they will compete in a scavenger hunt as they explore the JA BizTown community. As part of the activities, they will look at the characteristics of good leaders and participate in fun activities requiring creative teamwork. To wrap up the day, campers will learn all about finding a good job as they apply and inter view for their top 3 JA BizTown job choices.

Tuesday: The second day is all about finances. We start on the business side of money management.  Through three rounds of pricing competition, campers will try to out-sell their competitors. They'll experience supply and demand firsthand and will see the impact scarcity can have on what consumers purchase. Next, campers will learn about managing their own personal money. They'll open a checking and savings account and practice writing checks and making deposits. For campers who have visited JA BizTown before, new challenges will be presented to reinforce the skills they've already learned.

Wednesday: Now they're ready to run their JA BizTown businesses! Campers will spend the day working with their business team to operate their business. They'll take out a loan from the bank, buy inventory, set prices, create advertisements, pay bills, and start earning revenue by selling goods and services. Each camper will also have the chance to shop in their friends' businesses! They will earn a paycheck for all their hard work and start tracking their spending as active JA BizTown consumers.

Thursday: Campers start the day in their businesses. They'll continue with their jobs, perfecting their business skills. But, businesses need to be innovative to stay one step ahead of the competition. So, in the afternoon, campers will explore their own entrepreneurial spirit as they investigate ways to improve and expand their business. They'll create new marketing strategies and develop new products or services to provide to their customers. Campers will also be challenged to improve the JA BizTown community with an innovative business idea and create a business plan.

Friday: The day will kick off with presentations of campers' ideas for new businesses to a panel of "sharks". After that, we'll return to BizTown to see how their newly redesigned business operates. Campers will spend the day running JA BizTown, bringing all their innovations to life. There will also be some new products on the market for campers to buy! As JA BizTown winds down for the week, campers will look back at their business's performance. Who had the hottest selling products?  Who had the best ad slogan? All this (and more) will be revealed at the closing camp celebration. Parents are invited to join us at 2.30pm as campers give speeches, present awards, and share about their experiences at JA BizTown Summer Camp!
