5th and 6th grade students are not old enough to work,
carry a debit card, balance a checkbook, and
be the boss
of their own business

Or are they?

JA BizTown is an 8,000 square foot mini-city where students experience how the 'real world' works.

Each day JA BizTown opens its doors, 5th and 6th grade students become JA BizTown 'citizens' for the day where they work in one of 14 businesses, manage their personal and business finances, develop and sell products, hold business meetings, pay taxes and donate to charity.

Sixteen lessons of the JA BizTown curriculum taught in the classroom prepare students to apply for a job, participate in a job interview, write personal checks, use a debit card, balance a checkbook and run a successful business as a team.  After completion of the classroom preparation students visit JA BizTown for a 4 & 1/2 hour simulated workday experience, which provides the opportunity for students to connect the dots between what they learn in the classroom and the real world.

At JA BizTown, each citizen has a job for the day, participates in business and town meetings, gets paid twice, manages their personal checking account and debit card, purchases retail items to take home, has the opportunity to vote, and so much more!

The JA BizTown experience brings the 'real world' to life for 5th and 6th grade students as they participate in this interactive, project-based program.  Students learn to manage their personal finances as well as the importance of becoming a successful professional within our community.
