Junior Achievement Partners with University of Hartford for Hawk Nation Education Day

Local Students – from Elementary School through High School – to Learn About College Life, Financial Literacy

Students from across the region will attend a day of education that blends financial literacy and a first look at a college campus as part of a dynamic partnership between Junior Achievement of Southwest New England and the University of Hartford Athletics. “Hawk Nation Education Day” will take place on Thursday, November 21 at the University of Hartford.

Students from grades 3-12 from seven local school districts will attend a program on campus to see what college life is like on a typical day.  The event will begin with a tour of the campus and will be followed by Hartford Men’s Basketball team taking on Emerson College.

School districts include Bristol, East Hartford, Hartford, Meriden, New Haven, North Windham, and Windsor Locks. The participating students will receive a workbook including the JA Saves program to complete throughout the day.

Junior Achievement Saves is a financial literacy program that provides specific curriculum for students in elementary school to high school. The program provides downloadable family lesson plans that include skills such as planning for college, managing student loans, and discussing salaries high school students may desire.

“Junior Achievement’s goal for ‘Hawk Nation Education Day’ is to get students of all ages excited about going to college, and letting them know it can be within reach.  For many of these students, it will be their first look at a college campus,” said Jeremy Race, President and CEO of Junior Achievement of Southwest New England.

Junior Achievement – celebrating its 100th anniversary this year – is the world’s largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices.

Last school year in Connecticut, with the help of more than 3,300 volunteers – business professionals, parents, retirees, and college students – JA of Southwest New England taught more than 47,000 Connecticut students about business, jobs, and the importance of education for success.  In 2019, Junior Achievement of Southwest New England was awarded one of Junior Achievement USA’s highest honors for the fourth consecutive year: the Five Star Award, in recognition of its growth in student impact and superior fiscal performance.

Spread across seven dynamic schools and colleges, the University of Hartford is a four-year private university that has been guiding the purpose and passion of undergraduate and graduate students for over six decades. UHart’s student population includes approximately 5,000 undergraduate and 1,800 graduate students from 48 states and 46 countries.
