JA Our City®
JA Our City introduces students to financial literacy and learning objectives for third–grade social studies, including the characteristics of cities, the importance of economic exchange, and how people and businesses in cities manage their money. Students will apply money-management strategies to personal and business accounts.
- Provide practical information about the zones found within a city.
- Examine the importance of money to a city, why people pay taxes, and how people use different methods to pay for goods and services.
- Describe the contributions of financial institutions to a city and how they help businesses and people achieve their economic goals.
- Develop an understanding that entrepreneurs promote a healthy economy within a city.
The program is for students in third grade. It is composed of five sessions, and the average length of each session is 45 minutes. Materials are packaged in a self-contained kit that includes detailed plans for the volunteer and materials for 32 students.
JA programs correlate to state social studies, English, and math standards, and to the Common Core State Standards in English/language arts and mathematics.

Students examine the importance of money to a city.
Session Three: Money on the Move
Students learn how people earn income to pay for the goods and services sold in a city.
Session Four: My Bank Account
Students manage a personal bank account as if employed and living in a city.
Session Five: Open for Business
Students develop an understanding of how entrepreneurs promote a healthy economy within a city.
