Junior Achievement of Western PA and The Black School of Business at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College hosted the first of two virtual competitions of the recently redeveloped JA Titan®, an online simulation that allows teens to start and run a business. The competition is presented by AmeriServ Financial, The Reschini Group, S&T Bank, and Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
"The Black School of Business at Penn State Behrend is honored to partner with Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania on the JA Titan event, said Dr. Greg Filbeck, director of the Black School of Business at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. “Our School and Junior Achievement share the common vision of educating tomorrow's leaders in areas including workforce readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship."
For over a decade, the competition brought student teams together in person. This year, the event is entirely virtual, allowing students from across western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia to connect and compete against one another.
Open to students in 9th–12th grade, the first simulation day featured 27 student teams who competed as business CEOs in the phone industry, experiencing firsthand how an organization evaluates alternatives, makes decisions, analyzes the outcomes of those decisions, and then strategizes what to do next.
Jacob Hauf, a participant in the first competition and a junior at Cambridge Springs High School, stated that "Participating in JA Titan is actually quite vital for my future. I have big dreams to one day own a restaurant, and this competition taught me ways to budget money and many other things which would be highly beneficial for my future."
Leading up to competition, volunteers from the college and community teach five program modules that educate students on the concepts needed to run a successful business, including R&D, marketing, corporate responsibility, and production. The top three most profitable teams will take home monetary prizes.
