JA of Western Pennsylvania Scholarships

Junior Achievement of Western PA is proud to support JA students as they continue their education. Through EITC funding, as well as individual and corporate donations, Junior Achievement is able to offer a variety of High School and College Scholarships to students that have participated in different types of JA programming. 

Achievement Scholarship 
The Achievement Scholarships are worth up to $8,500. Scholarships are available and are rewarded to students who are currently attending a low achieving school that will attend a participating private school providing JA programming.

Requirements:

  • Students must  reside within the attendance boundary of a low-achieving school
    • To find a list visit www.pde.state.pa.us and follow the link for Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit Program to download a list of eligible schools
  • Students must be continuing their education at a participating nonpublic school that provides JA programs and is located in a school district outside of the recipient's school district of residence
  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Students must meet the scholarship program requirements as set forth by the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) through the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) program
  • A completed application form
  • A copy of student's transcripts or most recent report card
  • One Teacher recommendation
  • Applicants MUST SUBMIT a 2016 Federal 1040 Form for every adult in their household with their application in order to be eligible for the scholarship
  • To determine residency, applicants must provide a copy of one of the following or a similar document to prove their permanent resident status
    • Utility Bill
    • PA Driver's License
    • Voter ID Card
    • Military ID Card
    • Pay Stub from place of employment
  • Complete an essay submission that answers the following question:  Why is having financial literacy education important to my future success? Student's grade level determines submission requirement, which are as follows:
    • K-1 – draw a picture
    • 2-3 – write 50 word essay
    • 4-6 – write 150-200 word essay
    • 7-12 – write 250 word essay
 

Bishop David Zubik Scholarship (9th-11th Grade Catholic School students)
The Bishop David Zubik Scholarships are worth $1,000. A number of scholarships are available, and are awarded to 9th - 11th Grade students in Western PA who are currently attending a Catholic High School within the Dioceses of Altoona/Johnstown, Erie, Greensburg, or Pittsburgh and have participated in at least one volunteer-led JA classroom program during the 2016-2017 school year.

Requirements:

  • A completed application form
  • A copy of student's transcripts or most recent report card
  • One Teacher recommendation
  • Signed verification form from school (principal, teacher or JA coordinator), proving that students have participated in at least two JA classroom programs, or will complete them by June 1, 2016
  • Applicants MUST SUBMIT a 2016 Federal 1040 Form for every adult in their household with their application in order to be eligible for the scholarship
  • A typed 350-400 word essay answering the question: How has attending a diocesan school and participating in Junior Achievement impacted your future, academically or professionally?

 

Cardinal Donald Wuerl Scholarship (8th Grade Catholic School student)
The Cardinal Donald Wuerl Scholarships are worth $3,000. A number of scholarships are available, and are awarded to 8th Grade students in Western PA who are currently attending a Catholic Grade School within the Dioceses of Altoona/Johnstown, Erie, Greensburg, or Pittsburgh and will be entering a Catholic High School within those Dioceses in 2017. To qualify, students must have received at least two Junior Achievement classroom programs at a Catholic grade school.

Requirements:

  • A completed application form
  • A copy of student's transcripts or most recent report card
  • One Teacher recommendation
  • Signed verification form from school (principal, teacher or JA coordinator), proving that students have participated in at least two JA classroom programs, or will complete them by June 1, 2016
  • Applicants MUST SUBMIT a 2016 Federal 1040 Form for every adult in their household with their application in order to be eligible for the scholarship
  • A typed 200-250 word essay answering the question: How has Junior Achievement influenced your life in your diocesan school?

 

Thomas A. McConomy Scholarship (High School Senior)
The Thomas A. McConomy Scholarship is worth $1,000. It is awarded to one High School Senior from Western PA who has participated in at least one JA program during high school.

 Requirements:

  • HS senior who has participated in at least 1 JA program within the last 4 years
  • Minimum final GPA of 3.0
  •  1 teacher recommendation
  •  Verification of JA program participation from school or JA coordinator
  •  Copy of HS transcript or most recent report card
  • 250-300 word essay (typed) answering: How has your JA experience prepared you for success in your future academic and professional career?

 

JA/PSEA Partners for Public Education Scholarship (High School Senior)
The JA/PSEA Partners for Public Education Scholarship is worth $500. It is awarded to one High School senior from Western PA who has taught at least one Junior Achievement program at a local elementary school during high school. The winning student must plan to major in Education at an accredited college/university.

Requirements:

  • HS senior who has participated in at least 1 JA program within the last 4 years
  • Minimum final GPA of 3.0
  • 1 teacher recommendation
  • Verification of JA program participation from school or JA coordinator
  • Copy of HS transcripts or most recent report card
  • Majoring in education at an accredited college or university
  • 250-300 word essay (typed) answering: Why have you chosen education as your career, and how has participating in JA programs as a student influenced your decision to teach?

 

Robert J. Schuler Scholarship (High School Senior)
The Robert J. Schuler Scholarship is worth $1,000. It is awarded to one High School senior from Western PA who has participated in at least one JA program during high school.

Requirements:

  • HS senior who has participated in at least 1 JA program within the last 4 years
  •  Minimum final GPA of 3.0
  • Provide 1 teacher recommendation
  •  Verification of JA program participation from school or JA coordinator
  • Copy of HS transcripts or most recent report card
  • 250-300 word essay (typed) answering: How has your JA experience prepared you for success in your future academic and professional career?
