Junior Achievement and CNBC to Host a Virtual Town Hall for Teens on COVID-19

Junior Achievement is partnering with CNBC to host a virtual town hall for teens about the financial impact of COVID-19 on Thursday, April 23, 2020.

It will be hosted by CNBC Senior Personal Finance Correspondent Sharon Epperson and includes a panel of economists, entrepreneurs, psychologists and counselors.

Highlighted panelists include:

  • Daymond John, Founder and CEO, FUBU; Co-star, ABC's "Shark Tank”
  • Brad Klontz, PhD, PsyD, CFP, Founder, Financial Psychology Institute

Wisconsin students will be featured on the national virtual town hall: Amillia Bell of Milwaukee Public School's Rufus King High School and Nathan Russell of Menomonee Falls High School.

Junior Achievement of Wisconsin Releases Free Resource to Help Teens Understand Financial Impact of COVID-19

Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Junior Achievement of Wisconsin is releasing a free resource for teens titled Making Sense: Understanding the Financial Impact of COVID-19. The guide is designed to answer teens’ questions about the economic implications of COVID-19, including “Why are some store shelves empty?”, “Why are some people losing their jobs?” and “Are we going into a recession, or even a depression?” The guide is available at JA.org/MakingSense
“While social distancing is essential to fighting COVID-19, the disease and the steps we must take to address it are having a financial impact. Our goal is to help young people better understand what’s happening,” said Michael Frohna, president of Junior Achievement of Wisconsin. “April is Financial Literacy Month, and this is really an important time to be sharing this kind of information.”
The guide is written with middle school and high school students in mind. It uses relatable examples to explain what a recession is, how the Federal Reserve works and steps being taken by government and the private sector to deal with the economic impact associated with COVID-19. JA is also offering free resources to teachers and parents who may have students finishing school online this semester. Those resources are available at JA.org/Tomorrows.

Junior Achievement Offers Free Online-Learning Resources for Teachers, Parents, and Guardians During the COVID-19 Crisis

Junior Achievement of Wisconsin is providing free online-learning resources to teachers, parents, and guardians to help keep students engaged during this time.

Family-friendly, downloadable resources are available for elementary, middle, and high school students and are organized by school level. Lessons are less than 30 minutes and offer topics such as:

  • Wants vs. needs
  • Creating a savings plan
  • Tracking income and expenses on a budget
  • How to calculate a monthly car payment
  • Deciding on a college,
  • How to pay for college
  • Choosing a career
  • Preparing a resume
  • How to manage the current economic climate

Online Resources for teachers, parents and guardians during Coronavirus

“For more than 78 years, Junior Achievement of Wisconsin has approached challenges with resolve and determination,” said Michael Frohna, president of Junior Achievement of Wisconsin. “Volunteers, teachers, parents, and donors have led the way with each new venture in JA’s evolution. Today is no different. Current times require a new way of doing business—and Junior Achievement of Wisconsin is ready.”

To follow government social-distancing guidelines, Junior Achievement of Wisconsin (JA) has suspended in-person, volunteer-led programs until at least April 30. However for the continuation of the school year, Junior Achievement is offering teachers the option to lead JA programs as a part of their virtual lesson plans. Teachers also can choose the piloted volunteer or JA staff-led online program delivery option.

Each week, Junior Achievement will be highlighting one JA online-learning resource that teachers and parents can provide to students. Follow Junior Achievement of Wisconsin on social media @JAWisconsin for the weekly featured online resource. All online-learning resources are available here.

JA of Wisconsin Volunteer-led Programs Temporarily Suspended

Dear Valued Junior Achievement Volunteers and Academic Partners:

The recent arrival of the COVID-19 virus in Wisconsin has compelled Junior Achievement of Wisconsin to reaffirm one of our highest priorities:  creating a safe and inspiring place where students can explore their dreams and prepare for their futures.  Our desire is to do our part to mitigate the spread of this virus so that we can get back to fully living out our mission as quickly as possible.

Consequently, this means that effective Monday, March 16 we are suspending all volunteer-led, face-to-face programs, including classroom programs, JA in a Day, JA Business Challenge, JA Job Shadows, JA Career Days,  JA BizTown and JA Finance Park until at least April 30.

Volunteers: If you were scheduled to start a class or participate in a program, we will be in contact with you regarding other volunteer opportunities later this spring.  If you have started a class, you will have to suspend it now.  We will be reaching out to your teacher to request their support in completing any lessons on your behalf. Thank you for your understanding and for your support of Junior Achievement in your community.  

Educators: Effective Monday, March 16 we are prohibiting any person who is not a member of your school’s faculty or staff from leading face-to-face programs, including classroom programs, JA in a Day, JA Business Challenge, JA Job Shadows, JA Career Days,  JA BizTown and JA Finance Park until at least April 30.

Teacher/school staff-led programs in traditional and afterschool classroom settings will be fully supported. If your students were scheduled to start a class or began a class, we will be in contact with you regarding other options including teacher/school-staff-led programming, virtual volunteer-led lessons (via Skype or other similar platforms), or attempting to reschedule.  Any out-of-of school JA programming is canceled until further notice and we will work with you to reschedule later this spring, if possible.

Community First Career Exploration and Financial Literacy Education Center Now Open to Students in Wisconsin

The Community First Career Exploration and Financial Literacy Education Center in Appleton held a dedication and open house on Wednesday, January 22. The Center is a first of its kind in the country with Junior Achievement education offered on a technical college campus.

A partnership between Junior Achievement of Wisconsin and Fox Valley Technical College, with lead support from Community First Credit Union, the Center will offer students in grades 4 through 12, career awareness opportunities with a focus on STEM-related occupations and financial literacy learning. It will host two of Junior Achievement’s premiere programs, JA BizTown and JA Finance Park, which are also provided at JA Kohl’s Education Center in Milwaukee, and the Fox Valley Technical College Career Exploration program.

Junior Achievement programs, JA BizTown and JA Finance Park, will provide students real-world experiences of living in a community with life scenarios where they will get a job, manage a budget, purchase goods and services, vote and develop a savings plan.

The Fox Valley Tech Career Exploration program will provide authentic, age appropriate, hands-on and minds-on experiences in different career clusters such as healthcare, business, manufacturing and IT. Those activities are designed to introduce young learners to in-demand careers throughout the region.

The Center is set up as a simulated city for students, Miron Town Square, with these businesses: Amcor, Bergstrom Automotive, The Boldt Company, City Hall, Community First Credit Union, David Nelson Media Center, Fox Valley Tech Commons, Kimberly-Clark, Miller Electric Mfg. Co., Pieper Electric Inc., We Energies and Wisconsin Public Service, and the YMCA. Some of the immersive experiences for students include a virtual reality test drive at Bergstrom, healthcare screenings at the YMCA, and an augmented reality welding system at Miller Electric.

“You can’t be what you can’t see,” says Michael Frohna, president of Junior Achievement of Wisconsin. Our partnership with these local businesses in our simulated town, will let students know that these are some of the careers available for real, lifesustaining jobs.”

“Our strategic career exploration initiatives are built around giving young students a cost-effective, seamless pathway from education to a profession,” says Steve Meyer, manager of STEM education and development at FVTC. “This new center will bring to life vital skills and experiences to best prepare our future leaders.”

The Center is expected to support 15,000 students from throughout Northeast Wisconsin each year.
